Stamp Duty Relief - Taking action on WA's housing crisis

WESTERN AUSTRALIANS DESERVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO OWN THEIR OWN HOME, WITHOUT THE BURDEN OF EXTRA FEES.

Over the past seven years, the Cook Labor Government has let WA’s housing crisis spiral, with young people, families, and essential workers feeling the strain.

Labor’s failures to invest adequately in housing, reduce red tape, or make meaningful policy changes have led to housing shortages and soaring prices.

Home ownership has become an increasingly distant dream for many Western Australians.

Instead of taking meaningful steps to address the root causes of the housing shortage, Labor has introduced only minor adjustments that fail to keep up with rising prices and demand.

These changes have been little more than a patchwork of ineffective measures that have not addressed the core issues.

Programs meant to open up land for housing have stalled, with not a single home built on promised sites, while regional areas and lower-income families bear the brunt of low rental vacancy rates and limited affordable options.

For many Western Australians, the dream of home ownership is slipping further away, as Labor’s approach continues to favour short-term fixes over long-term solutions.

The WA Liberals will put home ownership back within reach for all Western Australians.

As more homes are priced outside the reach of average buyers, it’s become clear that this government lacks a real plan to make housing affordable.

Western Australians deserve decisive action to fix the ongoing housing crisis that’s putting home ownership and affordable rent out of reach for so many.

Only a WA Liberal Government will deliver it.

WHAT WE WILL DO.

The WA Liberals believe every Western Australian deserves a fair shot at starting their home ownership journey.

Instead of watching housing costs soar and availability shrink, we need a real plan that addresses the issues: increasing housing supply, making home ownership more accessible, and supporting those in need of social housing.

Unfortunately, with the current state of the housing crisis, many homes are falling outside of the stamp duty concession for first home buyers.

Supporting the next generation of homeowners ensures that our state’s economic future remains strong, by expanding long-term opportunities for families and individuals.

Western Australians deserve to get a fair shot at entering the property market to start their home ownership journey.

A WA Liberal Government will raise the stamp duty exemption threshold from $450,000 to $550,000 and extend the concession threshold from $600,000 to $700,000.

First home buyers purchasing homes valued between $600,000 and $700,000 will also see some stamp duty relief for the first time, with a $13,426 saving on a $600,000 property and a $6,713 saving on a $650,000 home.

Cutting taxes is in our DNA – this is a tax break for first home buyers who have been left behind as property prices climb.

At a time when cost-of-living pressures are forcing Western Australians to put future-planning on hold, it is important to provide immediate financial relief by reducing one of the largest upfront costs associated with buying a home.

This concession change not only makes home ownership more affordable but also reduces financial stress for families during the crucial first few years of home ownership.

Western Australians deserve a government committed to expanding access to safe, stable, and affordable housing options across our state.

Only the WA Liberal Party will remove financial barriers to homeownership for Western Australians.
