Licencing: recreational fishing - Reducing fishing licence costs

WESTERN AUSTRALIANS DESERVE BETTER THAN PAYING SEVEN TIMES MORE FOR FISHING LICENCES THAN IN OTHER STATES.

With 700,000 recreational fishers in Western Australia, recreational fishing is one of WA’s most popular pastimes, surpassing recreational AFL, cricket, and netball in active participation numbers.

Our world-famous coastline and vibrant ecosystems support a diverse range of fish species, enabling the fishing industry to thrive and cementing WA as a premier destination for passionate fishers.

Not only is it loved by many Western Australians, but it contributes significantly to our state’s economy, at around $1.1 billion annually, providing close to 10,000 jobs.

Recreational fishers also support tourism operators, fuel stations, caravan parks, and local communities wherever they travel.

Yet, Western Australia’s fishing licence requirements are the most burdensome in the country, with multiple licences and fees creating needless complexity.

It has never been more important to support recreational fishers here in WA and listen to their calls for a more streamlined process.

The WA Liberals believe in removing these financial and bureaucratic barriers for recreational fishers across our state.

Given the overall benefits to the recreational fishing sector, more can and should be done to make fishing more accessible for all Western Australians.

Only a WA Liberal Government will achieve it.

WHAT WE WILL DO.

The WA Liberals believe Western Australians should be able to enjoy recreational fishing in a way that is cheaper, more accessible, and beneficial for the community.

Over the last financial year, 229,000 licences were issued for recreational fishing activities, with licences for Rock Lobster, Abalone, Marron, Net Fishing, and Freshwater Angling all individually priced at $50.

The vast majority of these licences — over 125,000 — are ‘Recreation Fishing from Boat’ licences (RFBL) priced at $40.

To purchase every type of fishing licence in WA costs $290, double that of Tasmania, and seven times more expensive than New South Wales and Victoria.

A WA Liberal Government will amalgamate all fishing licences into one single licence, at a comprehensive price of $40.

This will promote long-term savings for recreational fishers who participate in more than one type of fishing activity, and benefit current RFBL holders by allowing them to branch out into all types of fishing.

All other Australian states — excluding Tasmania, which has two — use a single fishing licence system, which streamlines access for fishers and removes unnecessary bureaucracy.

Western Australians deserve a system of licencing that promotes greater enjoyment of Western Australian fishing and supports cheaper access to recreation during a cost-of-living crisis.

Our state also benefits when Western Australians participate in recreational activities that boost their mental health, increase socialisation, and strengthen industry.

Only the WA Liberal Party is committed to more efficient and cost-effective access to activities across WA, and ensuring Western Australians can enjoy all our state has to offer.
