Hospital & Chemo in the Home - Improving patient well-being and outcomes

Treatment and care in the home is a commonsense opportunity for patients and our health system.

Thousands of Western Australians receive treatment for illness and diseases every day.

While some patients – especially those with complex health issues – may require access to a hospital for treatment, there is an opportunity to provide more convenient care to those who receive consistent or regular short-stay treatment.

Where possible, providing hospital-level treatment in a patient’s own home, rather than in a hospital, is a preferable option for both patients and health professionals.

This commonsense model is supported and growing worldwide because it allows patients to maintain their routine, remain surrounded by loved ones, and enjoy the comforts of home.

Access to this care model through initiatives like Hospital in the Home and Chemo in the Home have already been shown to vastly improve overall patient experiences.

While the home-care model offers numerous benefits for patients, it also reduces costs for the health system.

Delivering chemotherapy treatments at home can save up to $500 per session.

Home-based care also frees up hospital beds and enhances patient well-being by offering treatment in familiar and comfortable surroundings.

It’s a win for both patients and the healthcare system.

The WA Liberals know both patients and the health sector will benefit from an expanded home treatment model.

Patients dealing with life-altering diagnoses such as cancer or chronic health issues deserve to receive care in a place that provides comfort and long-term support.

Empowering these methods of care delivery will enable more patients to receive the type of care they want and increase bed availability in our hospitals.

Only a WA Liberal Government will deliver it.

What We Will Do.

The WA Liberals believe Western Australian patients deserve the option to receive care where they want and support the wider health system in the process.

Expanding the availability and use of home chemo and treatment services will help reduce pressure on our hospital system, free up beds, and deliver massive long-term benefits to patients and the health system.

These home-care programs have also been shown to reduce hospital readmissions, deliver dedicated treatment to prevent complications and reduce travel and hospital admission issues.

With the program already delivering tens of thousands of treatments each year across Australia, our state’s health system will benefit from an even greater investment, giving Western Australians more choice.

A WA Liberal Government will commit an additional $20 million over four years to expand Hospital in the Home Services, and $4 million over four years to expand home-based chemotherapy services.

Expanding Hospital in the Home and Chemo in the Home services will give patients high-quality care in their own homes, whenever they need it.

By expanding home-based care, we’re allowing patients to heal in a familiar and supportive environment, surrounded by loved ones and daily comforts.

Shifting eligible patients to home-based care is not just about the comfort of those at home, it will also allow hospitals to free up beds and resources for those in need of urgent or inpatient care.

Western Australians deserve a government that will deliver medical care in an environment best suited to the needs of patients and that supports the wider health system.

Only the WA Liberal Party is committed to common-sense policies tailored to fix the backlog and stress seen across WA’s health system.
