100,000 NEW HOMES - Boosting WA's pipeline of housing supply

WESTERN AUSTRALIA IS FALLING BEHIND WHEN IT COMES TO DELIVERING ENOUGH HOUSES TO MEET THE INCREASING DEMAND.

WA is experiencing rapid population growth, with more people moving to the state and an increasing demand for housing.

However, the Cook Labor Government has not kept pace with this growth, failing to build enough homes to meet the needs of

our expanding communities.

WA currently faces a shortfall of over 33,000 homes over the next five years, with population growth figures suggesting this could get even worse.

After nearly eight years in power, the gap between homes built and homes needed is only getting wider under Labor.

Despite a clear need to build 26,000 new homes each year, in 2023-24 only 15,664 new home builds commenced, and even fewer the year before.

It’s little wonder there is such a severe housing shortage in WA.

A housing shortage increases housing costs and creates less choice, less availability and greater competition for available homes.

This lack of supply pushes prices up, making it harder for individuals and families, especially those with lower incomes,

to find affordable housing

The WA Liberals know this housing crisis hurts WA families, businesses, and regional communities.

It can also lead some of our most vulnerable into dire and unsafe situations, including homelessness.

Western Australia’s housing crisis is a direct result of the Cook Labor Government’s inaction, ineffective band-aid measures and policy disasters that have made the problem even worse.

Western Australians deserve a government that puts forward practical solutions to boost our housing supply, ensuring the number of homes in WA keeps pace with our state’s growth, now and into the future.

Only a WA Liberal Government will deliver it.

WHAT WE WILL DO.

The WA Liberals believe boosting our housing supply is critical in creating the future WA deserves.

Delivering real housing choices for Western Australians means providing Western Australian families with a stable economic foundation for the future.

Without changes to support the construction of housing, including addressing the cost of delivering housing, these necessary projects will remain at a standstill.

With the current shortages, and significant underlying issues limiting housing supply, more must be done to ensure that Western Australia’s housing stock can keep up with our anticipated growth.

The WA Liberals will significantly boost WA’s pipeline of housing supply, with a $500 million fund to tackle our state’s housing crisis by directly investing in infrastructure that unlocks more housing.

The Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund will fast-track the delivery of up to 90,000 homes in key growth areas and 10,000 apartments, putting funds on the table to boost WA’s housing supply by 100,000 homes.

The Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund will come through two key programs.

One is the $300m Enabling Infrastructure Program, which will fund infrastructure such as sewerage, roads, transmission lines, groundwater, reservoir and pump upgrades that unlock up to 90,000 homes in key growth areas.

Funding will be competitively awarded to infrastructure projects that can show a direct boost to housing supply as a result of expenditure under the program.

The other is a $200m Apartment Support Program that will support apartment construction by contributing up to $20,000 per dwelling to infrastructure, headworks, and statutory fees and charges costs for apartment projects.

This measure will get more projects moving sooner and directly boost Western Australia’s housing supply.

Western Australians across our state deserve a future-focused government dedicated to expanding access to and building more homes for the next generation of Western Australians.

Only the WA Liberal Party is committed to tackling our housing crisis with real solutions for the benefit of everyone across our state.
