• Mandatory electronic monitoring for individuals with a serious criminal history.
• Strengthen bail, parole, and supervision laws.
• Mandatory detention for tampering with electronic monitor or committing an offence while being electronically monitored.
The WA Liberals will strengthen Western Australia’s bail, parole and supervision laws to keep the public safe from dangerous repeat offenders.
Under the Cook Labor Government, a range of dangerous offenders have been released into the community with serious questions remaining unanswered regarding the level of supervision of those offenders, some of whom have gone on to reoffend.
Liberal Leader Libby Mettam said Western Australians rightfully expected a justice system that prioritised public safety and ensured accountability for those under supervision.
“A WA Liberal Government will introduce legislation to enforce stricter parole, bail and post-sentence supervision conditions, ensuring that community safety remains the top priority,” she said.
“Additionally, we will implement mandatory electronic monitoring for serious repeat offenders who are released to ensure they are constantly tracked and monitored and can be held accountable for their movements.”
Shadow Attorney General Nick Goiran said WA Labor had failed to update the state’s laws to provide adequate safeguards against individuals with serious criminal histories who posed a risk to the community while on bail, parole or post-sentence supervision orders.
“The recent case of an alleged rape near Whitfords Station, involving a registered sex offender, rightly raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of offender supervision in our community,” he said.
“It is simply appalling that after all this time the Premier has not given even a basic statement about what level of supervision was occurring in that case.
“What our community really needs is a Premier who will guarantee serious offenders are being monitored, however, at the moment we have Mr Cook who won’t even answer questions.
“The inadequate monitoring of such individuals undermines the integrity of our justice system and exposes law-abiding citizens to unnecessary risk.
“The WA Liberal Party believes that stricter monitoring conditions must be imposed on individuals with a history of serious offending, and that any attempt to evade such monitoring must result in immediate imprisonment.”
WA Liberal Candidate for Forrestfield George Tilbury said the Liberal’s approach to bail and parole was about accountability.
“We will ensure our laws reflect that those who repeatedly harm others will face the full consequences of their actions, rather than being granted bail or parole again and again at the expense of victims and the broader public.”
Ms Mettam said the new laws would be supported by the WA Liberals $100 million commitment to double the number of GPS tracking bracelets available to WA Police to monitor offenders who breach Violence Restraining Orders.
“A Mettam Liberal Government will take decisive action to restore law and order, ensuring that victims and law-abiding citizens are protected from those who seek to harm them,” she said.
